MAHLER Symphony No. 10

STRAVINSKY Firebird Suite

Heroes of the orchestral modernism of the 20th century, Mahler and Stravinsky sit side by side in a program of energy and challenge. Together these works capture the vitality of large-scale compositional development to yield a dazzling, evocative musical experience.

The Firebird was Igor Stravinsky's first large-scale work for orchestra; the 27-year-old had only published five compositions prior to its 1910 premiere. The work clearly shows Stravinsky on the cusp of a new world, mixing his orchestral mastery with the rhythmic vitality of a musical revolution about to burst out of his shell. The first movement of Mahler's final, rarely-heard symphony was left almost complete and can be heard today as the composer intended. Written in 1910, less than a year before his death, this work reflects the composer's inner turmoil at the end of his life.
